Key points in the game…

Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.

Man of the Match:

Raheem Sterling. The lively 19-year-old started the new campaign where he left off last season and he was involved in both Liverpool goals, slotting past Forster for the opener before heading into the path of Sturridge for the winner.

Goal of the Match:

It ultimately proved to mean little but Nathaniel Clyne took his equaliser brilliantly as he raced onto Tadic’s backheel to fire beyond Mignolet with an emphatic finish.

Miss of the Match:

Debutant Shane Long really should have equalised three minutes from time when Schneiderlin’s strike rocketed off the bar and into his path, but the Irishman could only nod wide from close range.

Pass of the Match:

Jordan Henderson took out the entire Southampton with an inch-perfect through ball that Gerrard would have been proud of for Sterling’s first-half opener.

In the  KOP CASThttp://dutchreds.com/kop-cast/kop-cast-goalkeeper-insight/ ) We made a statement that Mignolet had a chance of the Lifetime to make his mark at Liverpool this season.  And he was NOT up to the MARK for a team that is in the CL and need to win the prem after coming 2nd last season.  The fact is he let in 50 goals last season out of 38 games and needs to make a marked improvement. Well, talk about eating your hat! I think most would agree he put in the work and made some outstanding saves without question.

But can he keep it up?

Can he continue to improve ?

And do we need a top draw keeper to make him work for the Jersey ?

Rogers said "We had to grind out a result and today was a brilliant win for us. It was a tough game, the first game back into the new season. I'm really happy with that determination and character to win a football match. As the season rolls on, we'll get better and more fluent. It was very hard-fought.

They are a good side, they have got some very good players and an experienced manager that has come in and got them organised. It was always going to be a difficult game. To get the three points was vital. The supporters were brilliant for us today, as they have been in my time here. We showed guts and determination. Thankfully, we could change the game."

Roger went on to say " I do still think we want another striker. It's something we'll look at, but it'll depend on the availability of one. We'll search for that through until the end of the window."
